A list of ten exquisite B&W games to enjoy

If you, like me, are a fan of games that are designed in black and white or forged in beautiful shades of gray, this post is for you. I made a selection of iconic games that I tried with this visual footprint. Let's go to the list (in no order of preference, I just remembered and wrote).

1.SILT

silt

This indie game is a gem – without making a pun on the aquatic theme. Silt is an exploration into an inhospitable dark marine environment. You control a diver who can possess the creatures and use their “powers” to solve the puzzles. The settings are very sinister.

2.FRACTER

fracter

Fracter has already been the subject of a entire post here at UoD. Game with a tense atmosphere and unique sound elements to give you that delicious chill. You lead a girl through a ghastly maze, running away from her dark copies and rescuing parts of her soul. Worth a lot!

3. LIMBO

limbo 1

Good, LIMBO is one of the most iconic and award-winning indies in the gaming ecosystem. Puzzle-platform that created a school of derivative games within the same theme. Limbo says it all without using a word in the narrative structure. I've already completed it about four times on four different platforms and – every time I play – I always discover something new. Thank you, PlayDead for this wonder.

4.DEATH CROWN

deathcrow

Strange and extremely fun title. Death Crown is a type of RTS with PC game graphics from the 80s. The only problem is that it's too short.

5.STILSTAND

stilstand

Stilstand is a visual novel with a very particular narrative for games: it is a hand-drawn story about the terrible feeling of being aimless in life and seeing everyday life slipping through your fingers. It doesn't have much of a challenge, as – basically – you just have to click on elements on the screen, but the unfolding of the plot is cool.

6.ARROG

arrog

Half an hour of gameplay about acceptance of death and Peruvian funeral traditions. Another hand-drawn indie game with a really weird soundtrack.

7.VASILIS

vasilis

Vasilis is a very dramatic game. In it, you control a lady of some age traveling the streets of Kiev (Ukraine) in search of her missing husband. The big problem is that protests are taking place against the government and you need to be careful with everything around you.

8.ALVEOLE

alveole

I think the best word to describe this game is “ingenious”. Alveole is a VERY minimalist puzzle game. But, very much so. You only do one thing in the game: press a button and the character jumps; However, the game's creators made a huge development based on this simple action and you need to combine the jumping action with moments of doing nothing to unlock the game's trophies.

9.PONG

pong

This list wouldn't be complete if we didn't talk about one of the most important games in the gaming industry: PONG! Originally born in black and white, the game is a minimalist tennis match and one of the kickoffs on home consoles. It was made in B&W because that was what was available at the time, but it is a classic that is still alive today, inspiring many games.

10.HIVE (CARBON EDITION)

hive

Oops! Of course, this list would not only have digital games. A good boardgame always shines on this type of occasion. Hive is one of my favorite strategy games. This special version with the black and white pieces is sensational. Worth every penny. The pieces are made of bakelite and make any table more beautiful. =)
