Sees everything, knows nothing

The mere image of a grandmother and her newborn grandson is magical. It symbolizes the great journey. Polarity of experiences.

This morning I received a short poem, written by a grandmother (Mrs. Evelyn Jean Pine), about her first meeting with her newborn grandson. And in this brief poem there was a phrase that captured me, as soon as I read it: “You see it all without knowing all”. You see everything, without knowing anything. Wow.

Indeed, the condition of a newcomer to life and the planet gives him a unique “blank paper” condition, in which absolutely EVERYTHING is new and EVERYTHING remains to be discovered. Have you thought? You open your eyes and absolutely 100% of what enters your retina (or ears, or skin or nose) any sound, any image... everything is new, everything is unknown. Of course you know, after all you've been there, in that same condition. We just don't remember and don't even realize it later.

It was then that, reflecting a little more, I thought: but is this really a condition exclusive to newborns? Could it be that, in a certain way, life doesn’t offer us this same possibility every new day? With each new opportunity?

No, this condition is not exclusive to the first days of life. Literally it is, but conditionally, it is not. It resonates through the years, whispering in our ears that even though we accumulate knowledge and experiences, there is always something new under the sun. With each dawn, we are invited to rediscover the world around us, to relearn what we thought we knew and to marvel at what we don't yet know.

This insight serves as a reminder that life is an eternal state of learning. And not just in the “YouTube course” sense. It's a matter of being aware of this opportunity in every mundane moment. Every person we meet, every place we visit, every challenge we face is an opportunity to expand our horizons and fill our blank paper with new stories and lessons. The humility of recognizing that we will never know everything keeps us open and curious, eager for another page to be filled.

So, while the newborn represents the epitome of this journey of discovery, it also inspires us to keep that spark of curiosity and wonder alive. In a world where routine can easily blind us to the extraordinary, remembering a newcomer's perspective can be the key to rediscovering the beauty and magic hidden in the everyday.

So as we move forward on our journey, let the wisdom inherent in a newborn's innocence guide us. May we see everything without knowing everything, embracing each day as a new opportunity to learn, grow and, above all, marvel. Because it is in the search for the unknown and in eternal learning that we find the true meaning of life.
