Rosie, the robot domestic worker from the Jetsons, remember? She is the one who best exemplifies the coexistence of a robot as part of a family. There is also the robot from the series “Lost in Space” (the one from the original series) or even R2-D2. What we have in common is this closeness to humans. The pet robot. The pet robot.
O Vector is a serious first candidate for this vacancy, in real life. Before him there was Aibo, that little dog from Sony (among others). But the vector is more versatile. And despite being small and looking more like a toy (like its previous version aimed at children, Cozmo), it has the great idea of little eyes capable of expressing several different feelings. Eyes have been extremely strong points of human connection since we were born and it was no coincidence that the company hired animators from Pixar and Dreamworks just to develop this repertoire of expressions.
Vector only needs a Wi-Fi network to work. It has an HD camera that covers a 120º visual field and 4 microphones to capture commands in the style of voice assistants.
You just say “Hey Vector” and start a conversation, which can also be started if you stare at him for a while. And he may still be far from being a Rosie, but he's a good and fun candidate to be the first step in that direction.
Vector will be priced at $250 and is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter (has already exceeded the initial target of US$500,000) and is expected to start deliveries from October.
In time: yes, a dog is cooler. The term “pet” was used for illustration purposes only ;)
